This was the third book in Pullman's His Dark Materials trilogy and revealed the ending to the adventure. The book revolved around the idea that there were many universes and Lyra and Will, two kids from other worlds, must live up to their destiny. Dust, a form of conscious mind, is drifting away and Lyra and Will must stop it in order to save the human race.
Love it or hate it? Why?
Actually, it's somewhere in-between. Although it was a great book, it was still a disappointing end to the trilogy. Many of the things hinted at in the first two books were missing.
Would you recommend this story to a friend?
Yes. It was a pretty good book.
What grade would you give this book?
A

Too good for words "This was a great book... I almost cried at the end. My sister, after she read it, cried for 45 min. (I timed... it's offical, I have no life) This is such a great book. It is exciting, and there are relationships... perfect book!!! That is what it is! " -- A reader from Carmel, IN, 9/4/2003

A very powerful and memorable book "I cried at the end of this book. Pullman creates a very heartful ending that is both harsh and beautiful. While the trilogy's ending is very much a religous commentary, the reader should really just go-with-it and appreciate the book for what it is: a boldly creative work of fiction with memorable and believable characters. If you liked the first two books, definitely read this one. It will stay with you for a long time, whether you like the ending or not. " -- A reader from Carmel, IN, 5/18/2003

I did not enjoy this book. "In this book, the plot was boring and it was mostly the same things that happpened in the oher books in the series. Lyra and Will save the day again, but with a lot of confusion about what is good and evil, right and wrong, and what side you should be on. Also, I think that books should have better descriptions. Phillip Pullman is not the best author for writing descriptions and it is hard to usnderstand what is going on. Overall, I did not enjoy this book. " -- A reader from Carmel, IN, 7/17/2002 |
